Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala) [India], October 29 (ANI): The state DGP confirmed on Sunday that there were two explosions in Kochi’s Kalamassery during a prayer hall meeting, resulting in one fatality and several injuries. The preliminary investigation suggests that Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) were used to trigger the blasts, and further investigations are underway, as per Kerala DGP Shaik Darvesh Saheb.
The DGP informed that 36 injured individuals are currently receiving treatment in various hospitals, and a thorough investigation into the incident is ongoing. The explosion occurred at the Zamra International Convention and Exhibition Centre around 9:40 am during a regional meeting. The senior officers, including the additional DGP, are at the scene, with the DGP himself expected to arrive shortly. The DGP stated that strict action will be taken against those responsible, and a special team will be constituted.
In response to the incident, Union Home Minister Amit Shah has directed the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and National Security Guard (NSG) to dispatch teams to Kerala and initiate an investigation. He also discussed the situation with Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan during a phone call.
CM Pinarayi Vijayan expressed condolences for the loss of life and referred to the incident as “very, very unfortunate.” Health Minister Veena George has instructed the Health Department and Medical Education Department to provide the best treatment available to those injured in the explosion.
According to Kalamassery CI Vibin Das, the first explosion occurred at approximately 9 am. The blasts took place on the last day of the three-day meeting that started on October 27, with over 2,000 attendees present during the prayer meeting.
