Intel Collaborates with Eight Indian Companies to Boost Manufacturing of “Make-in-India” Laptops
In a significant move, chip maker Intel has announced its collaboration with eight renowned domestic Electronic Manufacturing Services (EMS) companies and Original Design Manufacturers (ODMs) to accelerate the manufacturing of “Make-in-India” laptops. This initiative aims to support the government’s Make in India campaign and drive technology-led growth in the country.
The companies Intel is partnering with include Bhagwati Products Ltd, Dixon Technologies India Ltd, Kaynes Technology India Ltd, Optiemus Electronics Ltd, Panache Digilife Ltd, Smile Electronics Ltd, Syrma SGS Technology Ltd, and VVDN Technologies Private Ltd. This collaboration highlights Intel’s commitment to promoting the development of the electronics manufacturing sector in India.
Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Union Minister of State for Electronics and IT, Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, expressed his satisfaction with the partnership, stating, “I am very pleased that global organizations like Intel are partnering with India, helping to build and catalyze the electronics manufacturing ecosystem for laptops and compute.” Chandrasekhar further emphasized the alignment of this collaboration with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision to drive India’s Digital Economy to $1 trillion and enable the electronics manufacturing ecosystem to contribute $300 billion by 2025-26.
Under this collaboration, Intel is sharing its expertise to facilitate the production of complete entry-level laptops in India. This includes utilizing state-of-the-art surface mount technology (SMT) lines, establishing a quality control process for components, and benchmarking finished products. Additionally, the chip maker is providing support to ODMs in both Semi Knocked Down (SKD) and Completely Knocked Down (CKD) processes.
Santhosh Viswanathan, VP & MD, India Region, Intel, highlighted the significance of this collaboration, stating, “By enabling the laptop manufacturing process—from surface mount technology assembly to finished product—we are not only meeting the demands of the Make in India initiative but also contributing to the technological progress of the nation.”
Moreover, Intel is set to host the India Tech Ecosystem Summit in November, bringing together numerous local manufacturers to showcase a broader range of devices being made in India.
This collaboration between Intel and Indian companies not only strengthens the Make in India initiative but also underscores the country’s technological advancement in laptop manufacturing. With Intel’s support and expertise, the growth of the electronics manufacturing sector in India is set to accelerate further.
