ZPM dethrones MNF, wins 27 out of 40 seats in Mizoram polls

Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) emerges victorious in Mizoram, claiming 27 out of 40 seats in the House and toppling the ruling Mizo National Front (MNF). The ZPM secured big wins, including CM face Lalduhoma’s triumph in Serchhip. However, the MNF managed to secure nine seats and was leading in one. Additionally, the BJP, won the Palak and Saiha seats, and the Indian National Congress secured the Lawngtlai West seat.

Notable defeats included Deputy Chief Minister and MNF candidate Tawnluia, MNL Health Minister R Lalthangliana, and Rural Development Minister Laruatkima, who all lost to ZPM candidates in their respective constituencies. Chief Minister and MNF chief Zoramthanga also faced defeat, losing to ZPM candidate Lalthansanga.

The ZPM emerged victorious in numerous other seats across the state, while the MNF won in various constituencies as well. The counting of votes, which began at 8 am, involved over 4,000 personnel and was held in 13 centers.

Polling, which took place on November 7, saw a high turnout of over 80% of the state’s 8.57 lakh voters. A total of 174 candidates, including 18 women, contested the elections. The MNF, ZPM, and Congress each contested 40 seats, with the BJP fielding candidates in 23 seats and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) making its debut in Mizoram politics with candidates in four seats. Additionally, there were 17 Independent candidates.
