Four districts in Kerala – Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, and Idukki – under orange alert

Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala – Rains continued to pour over Kerala on Monday, with the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing an orange alert in four districts of the state. The districts of Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, and Idukki were placed under the orange alert, indicating the possibility of very heavy rainfall ranging from 11 cm to 20 cm. Additionally, a yellow alert was issued for eight other districts, suggesting heavy rainfall between 6 and 11 cm.

The IMD also predicted the occurrence of thunderstorms with moderate rainfall and gusty winds in Thiruvananthapuram, Idukki, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod districts. These weather conditions are expected to persist throughout the day.

Earlier in the day, the IMD reported the presence of cyclonic circulations over coastal Tamil Nadu and its neighboring regions, as well as over the Lakshadweep area near the Southeast Arabian sea and the Kerala coast. These atmospheric conditions are likely to bring about light to moderate rainfall, thunderstorms, gusty winds, and lightning in many parts of Kerala on Monday and Tuesday.

In response to the heavy rains, state Health Minister Veena George urged residents to exercise extreme caution to prevent the spread of infectious diseases in flooded areas. She emphasized the risk of leptospirosis, which can be caused by contact with water or soil contaminated with animal urine, particularly rats. The health department is closely monitoring cases of dengue and leptospirosis, and the minister advised against self-medication. Surveillance in the affected districts will be strengthened, and awareness campaigns will be intensified to ensure public safety.

During a brief respite from the rain in the morning, water receded from most flooded areas. However, some locations, like the Kochuveli pit line in Thiruvananthapuram, remained waterlogged, leading to train delays and rescheduling. The Thiruvananthapuram Central-New Delhi Kerala Express, originally scheduled to depart at 12:30 pm, had to be rescheduled to 7:35 pm due to the persistent flooding at the Kochuveli pit line.

As the rainfall continues, residents are advised to stay vigilant and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety.
