This electric vehicle battery company has potential for double-digit gains in the future.

“CATL: China’s EV battery giant poised for outsized gains”

Contemporary Amperex Technology, also known as CATL, is an influential player in the electric vehicle industry that often flies under the radar. As the leading company by market capitalization on the Shenzhen stock exchange, CATL boasts a larger valuation than other local heavyweights such as BYD. With major industry clients including BMW and Tesla, CATL is a key supplier of electric car batteries.

Despite the overall diminished performance of Chinese stocks throughout the year, CATL stands out with still a 13% decline thus far. However, stock analysts remain bullish on CATL’s prospects, citing its strong position in the EU market and its localized production capabilities.

Nomura analysts, for example, maintain a Buy rating for CATL and have set a price target of 315 yuan, representing a potential upside of nearly 67% from the current valuation. Similarly, HSBC analysts are optimistic about CATL’s technology leadership and production commitment in the EU, and have set a price target of 266 yuan, an uptick of over 40% from the current price.

Despite a slight underperformance in its third-quarter earnings, CATL continues to win contracts with major European automakers, demonstrating its ability to maintain profitability even in the face of market oversupply. Its expansion into new battery chemistries, such as sodium-ion batteries, is seen as a significant breakthrough and a factor contributing to CATL’s market growth.

The impending launch of Li Auto’s purely battery-powered vehicle, powered by the new Qilin battery from CATL, is only one example of the company’s innovative products making an impact in the market. UBS analysts have printed a price target of 400 yuan a share, reflecting their confidence in CATL’s future performance.
