Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar has expressed agreement with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s concerns regarding the misuse of AI and the potential dangers of deepfakes. During the Diwali Milan program at BJP Headquarters in New Delhi on November 17, PM Modi cautioned the public about the increasing threat of artificial intelligence in creating misleading ‘deepfakes’. He shared a personal experience of seeing a fake video showing him participating in Garba.
Chandrasekhar emphasized the importance of recognizing the harm caused by misinformation and deepfakes, powered by AI. He cited the need for caution in utilizing the internet and AI, while also acknowledging the potential for chaos, disorder, and violence incited by these technologies.
The Minister assured continued efforts to develop a framework, potentially including new legislation, to protect the safety and trust of the 1.2 billion Indians using the internet. Chandrasekhar also highlighted ongoing engagement with internet platforms and the industry to prevent harmful content such as deepfakes from disrupting the digital space.
Furthermore, he announced the government’s intention to collaborate with the industry to address these issues, with plans to reveal the initial steps on November 24. This comes in light of recent incidents, such as the deepfake video involving actor Rashmika Mandanna, which quickly went viral before being identified as a deepfake.
Ultimately, the Indian government aims to establish a robust framework to safeguard digital citizens and eliminate the threat of misinformation and deepfakes in the online environment.
