There is a low probability of Rohit Sharma playing T20Is in the near future.

India’s cricket captain Rohit Sharma may be stepping back from T20 internationals, according to sources in the BCCI. The 36-year-old player has not participated in any T20Is since India’s T20 World Cup semi-final exit in November 2022, with Hardik Pandya taking the lead in T20Is. Despite playing 148 T20Is and scoring 3853 runs, Rohit Sharma has expressed a preference for focusing on ODI and Test cricket. The BCCI source revealed that Rohit had extensive discussions with selector Ajit Agarkar about his decision to stay away from T20Is, and the captain himself volunteered for this adjustment. The team now has four openers, Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Ishan Kishan, and Ruturaj Gaikwad, all proven IPL performers, to fill the gap.

The BCCI source also suggested that if the younger players do not perform well, they may ask Rohit to reconsider. However, it’s understandable that at this point in his career, Rohit would like to manage his workload in order to avoid injuries. With seven Tests scheduled between December 2023 and March 2024, Rohit’s primary focus will be on red-ball cricket. He still has a chance of leading India to the World Test Championship final in 2025, especially given his strong form in the traditional format since 2019.

In addition, India’s pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah is expected to lead the attack in the two-Test series in South Africa, alongside Mohammed Shami and Mohammed Siraj. However, they will likely be rotated during the five-Test series against England early next year. Following his recovery from a long injury-related break, Bumrah is reportedly back at peak fitness and ready to make a comeback to Test cricket. The BCCI source indicated that Bumrah will likely participate in the T20 World Cup if all goes well.
