Adjournment Sine Die: Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha Conclude Special Parliament Session

India achieves historic milestone as Rajya Sabha passes women’s reservation bill with unanimous support

On Thursday, India made history as the Rajya Sabha, the Upper House of Parliament, cleared the women’s reservation bill. The motion garnered an overwhelming majority of support, with 215 Members of Parliament (MPs) voting in favor of the bill, and none against or abstaining.

Prior to the vote, MPs from all parties in Rajya Sabha expressed their verbal support for the bill. Despite this, some opposition members dismissed the bill as merely an election gimmick. However, their objections did not hinder the bill’s progress.

The bill had already been cleared in the Lok Sabha, the Lower House of Parliament, on September 20. It received strong backing from 454 Lok Sabha MPs, with only two MPs voting against the proposed legislation.

The women’s reservation bill seeks to introduce a reservation of 33 percent for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies. This landmark legislation aims to address the existing gender disparity and increase female representation in the political arena.

With its passage in both houses of Parliament, the women’s reservation bill now awaits final approval from the President of India before it becomes law. Once implemented, this legislation will empower and encourage more women to participate in politics at all levels.

By passing this bill, India demonstrates its commitment to gender equality and inclusivity in its political system. The country joins other nations around the world in taking concrete steps towards achieving greater representation and empowerment of women in positions of power.

The successful passage of the women’s reservation bill is not only a significant achievement for India but also sends a powerful message to the rest of the world. It sets an example for other countries to follow and emphasizes the importance of empowering women and ensuring their active participation in decision-making processes.
