Sabeer Bhatia states that Indian startups prioritize cost efficiency, while US startups prioritize time-saving strategies.

New Delhi, India – Indian entrepreneurs have been advised by Sabeer Bhatia, the founder of Hotmail, to focus on their cost-efficient business models for Indian customers rather than trying to conquer the global market. Bhatia, who was in the city for the launch of an Artificial Intelligence (AI) and entrepreneurship course in collaboration with Jamia Millia Islamia, emphasized the differences in thinking between India and the rest of the world.

“It all comes down to learning how to walk before you can run. Simply said…don’t try to conquer the whole world because you’ve conquered India… the way people in India think is different from the way the rest of the world thinks,” Bhatia told PTI during the collaboration announcement.

Bhatia highlighted the cost efficiency economics of Indian startups compared to the time-saving focus of US startups. He also reiterated his previous statement that many Indian startups are merely copying western business models, which he believes is not suitable for India due to the country’s abundance of human capital.

Bhatia referenced the delivery model in India, which has been in existence for decades, where people could get groceries delivered at home with a simple phone call. He admitted that he was unaware of the edtech sector and was unfamiliar with solutions like BYJU’S.

As part of the collaboration with universities like JMI, Show Reel announced funding for 1,00,000 entrepreneurs, aiming to promote entrepreneurial learning. Bhatia dismissed any comparisons of Show Reel with entertainment apps like Moj and Josh, emphasizing that their focus has always been on the professional space.

The Silicon Valley-based platform initially launched in 2021 as a video resume pitch, but Bhatia found that people preferred to see job opportunities on the platform rather than recording their own resumes. This transition led him to shift the platform towards entrepreneurship.

Bhatia also mentioned his concept of “Dolphin tank,” which he envisions as a competitor to the popular show “Shark Tank.” He hinted at upcoming details of how the show will help teach entrepreneurs to create their own businesses.

Discussing generative technologies, Bhatia expressed his belief that they will revolutionize every aspect of human life. He highlighted the potential of having an assistant with constant access to internet knowledge but without critical thinking skills. He encouraged individuals to embrace AI and avoid staying on the sidelines.

Vice Chancellor Najma Akhtar of Jamia Millia Islamia expressed pride in partnering with ShowReel and Bhatia, acknowledging his role in leading India’s tech revolution and their joint effort to revolutionize the education industry.
