Amazon Prime Video will stream Sound of Freedom.

Amazon Prime Video has acquired the rights to the highly successful film “Sound of Freedom” produced by Angel Studios. The film, led by Jim Caviezel, earned over $180 million at the domestic box office and nearly $250 million worldwide, surpassing major studio films like “The Flash” while being made on a budget of just $14.5 million.

Starting from December 26, the film will be available for streaming on Prime Video in the United States. The financial details of the streaming agreement have not been disclosed by either company.

“Sound of Freedom” is based on the true story of a government agent who leaves his job to save a young girl from sex traffickers in Colombia. The film gained significant attention from audiences, attracting moviegoers week after week since its opening with $14.2 million during the July 4 holiday weekend.

The success of “Sound of Freedom” at the box office was partly due to a unique campaign initiated by the filmmakers. They encouraged moviegoers to purchase tickets that can be claimed online for future screenings, aiming to provide access to those who may not be able to afford them. Angel Studios refers to this approach as “pay it forward.”

In addition to its unconventional marketing strategies, Angel Studios employed its crowdfunding model to raise $5 million for the distribution of the film. This came after 20th Century Fox, the previous rights holder, shelved the release following its acquisition by the Walt Disney Co. in 2018.

The anti-sex trafficking thriller has resonated with older audiences, many of whom had not returned to theaters since the Covid-19 pandemic. It has also gained popularity within conservative political circles. Former President Donald Trump hosted a private screening of the film at his golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey, during the summer.

Angel Studios, known for its faith-based content, has an exciting lineup of projects in the pipeline. In December, they will release a sci-fi thriller titled “The Shift,” followed by a biographical drama called “Cabrini” in March.
