Google employees work longer than the standard 9-to-5 workday, refuting earlier reports of light workloads, according to an HR representative from the company.
The representative disclosed that most salaried Googlers already work longer than 8-hour days, making a compressed work schedule difficult to achieve. The company does, however, allow employees to apply for schedules that are 60% or 80% of full-time.
This insight caused some workers to eagerly share the information with friends and relatives, and memes circulated among employees referencing the reports of a Google software engineer working just one hour per day.
In response, Google’s spokesperson Courtenay Mencini stated that Googlers can ask for more flexible schedules, subject to review based on their roles and teams. Mencini also noted that, as with any company, employees may work longer hours in a week to meet deadlines or cover for colleagues.
However, despite the flexibility of part-time schedules, the company does not consider compressed work weeks to be as compatible with overall team schedules. Additionally, Google employees have received public backlash due to the company’s widely known corporate perks.
