Amazon and SpaceX have reached a deal to launch satellites supporting Amazon’s Project Kuiper. The deal involves using SpaceX’s reusable Falcon 9 rockets for three planned launches in early to mid-2025. Though financial terms have not been disclosed, the launches will help Amazon increase its capacity to deploy low Earth orbit satellites beginning in the first half of 2024. Amazon also announced partnerships with Arianespace, United Launch Alliance, and Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin for additional satellite launches.
In response to the news, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk stated that their satellite launches for competitors are conducted fairly. Meanwhile, representatives for SpaceX have not provided public comment.
Amazon launched two prototypes of its Project Kuiper satellite constellation in early October, with plans to launch over 3,200 satellites over the next six years for orbital broadband internet. In comparison, SpaceX’s Starlink has already launched over 4,000 satellites with the aim to build a constellation of about 42,000. As of September, Starlink has reportedly achieved internet connectivity on all seven continents, providing high-speed internet to over 2 million people across 60 countries.
