Amazon takes on Microsoft and Google with new chatbot, Q, which was announced on Tuesday at the Reinvent conference in Las Vegas. The chatbot, named after the character in the James Bond movies, is powered by artificial intelligence and designed to help users in the workplace. It will be available for free during the preview period and will then have tiered pricing for different user types. Q can assist with understanding AWS capabilities, troubleshooting issues, and automatically making changes to source code to reduce developers’ workload.
Users will be able to interact with Q in communication applications and software developers’ text-editing applications, as well as in AWS’ online Management Console. The chatbot can connect to more than 40 enterprise systems, allowing users to discuss information stored in Microsoft 365, Dropbox, Salesforce, Zendesk, and AWS’ S3 data-storage service. Additionally, users can upload and ask questions about documents while interacting with Q.
Steven Dickens, VP and practice leader at the Futurum Group, a technology industry research firm, believes AWS Q will be widely adopted by both developers and cloud admins due to its potential to simplify AWS service navigation. This marks Amazon’s latest effort to expand its end-user applications beyond core computing and storage services.
This represents Amazon’s latest effort to challenge its rivals in productivity software. The company’s previous end-user applications have not met with the same success as its core computing and storage services, but Amazon seems poised to make a mark with Q. The new collaboration with Salesforce’s Slack is expected to have broad appeal.
AWS is clearly targeting both developers and cloud admins with Q’s multifunctionality. The chatbot, driven by generative AI, has the potential to become a game changer for AWS customers. It has garnered praise for resisting the urge to create a separate AI assistant for each service in its portfolio. As a result, industry analysts anticipate that Q will see widespread adoption by both developers and cloud admins.
