“Amazon layoffs reach India as well; Alexa, find my job”

Amazon announces layoffs in India and around the world, with “several hundred employees” from its Alexa division being impacted. The e-commerce giant is focusing on artificial intelligence (AI) and will consult with affected employees to communicate the decision. The layoffs are part of a shift in priorities to better align with customer needs, according to Daniel Rausch, Vice President of Alexa and Fire TV team. The company is also investing in generative AI to enhance the Alexa experience. Impacted employees will receive packages that include job placement support and transitional health insurance benefits. This news comes as Dave Limp, head of the Devices and Services division at Amazon, announced his departure from the company, with former Microsoft executive Panos Panay taking over his role. Amazon made similar layoffs in its Devices & Services division last year as part of company-wide cuts. The company did not provide further details on the initiatives being discontinued. Rausch said that affected colleagues in the US and Canada would also be notified of role reductions.
