Cancellation of leader summit prompts Biden to cancel Jordan leg of Mideast trip.

President Joe Biden’s planned visit to Jordan as part of his Middle East trip has been canceled following the abrupt cancellation of a leaders summit on humanitarian aid for Palestinians. The decision comes amidst escalating unrest in the region in response to the bombing of a hospital in Gaza. Originally, Biden was scheduled to meet with Jordan’s King Abdullah, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, and Palestinian Authority President Mahmound Abbas after his visit to Israel.

Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi stated on state television that there is no point in discussing anything other than stopping the war in light of the current situation. The al-Ahli Hospital bombing in Gaza City resulted in numerous casualties and further intensified the conflict between Israel and Hamas.

A White House official informed CNBC that Biden expressed his deepest condolences for the lives lost in the hospital explosion and wished a speedy recovery to the wounded. The decision to cancel the visit to Jordan was also influenced by President Abbas’ declaration of mourning for the victims of the hospital attack.

Videos showing the aftermath of the bombing depicted harrowing scenes, with the Hamas militant group blaming Israeli airstrikes for the destruction of the hospital. Israel, however, denied responsibility and stated that the IDF (Israeli Defense Forces) is conducting an investigation to ensure accuracy in their targeting.

Moreover, angry protestors in various capitals demanded an end to the Israeli military operation. Israel’s aerial bombardment campaign, which it refers to as a total siege, includes cutting off essential supplies like water, food, and electricity to the two million people living in Gaza.

The humanitarian crisis unfolding in Gaza was intended to be a major focus of Biden’s trip, as evidenced by the canceled summit. The United States has been collaborating with Egypt and Israel to establish humanitarian corridors for evacuating women and children from the most heavily affected areas.

Biden expressed confidence in ensuring access to medicine, food, and water for the innocent people in Gaza during an interview on “60 Minutes”. However, the cancellation of the leaders summit and the ongoing unrest highlight the challenges and urgency in addressing the humanitarian situation in the region.
