Congress to be led by Sonia Gandhi in Lok Sabha on Women’s Reservation Bill

Congress leader Sonia Gandhi to lead the debate on the Women’s Reservation Bill in Lok Sabha, according to sources. She will serve as the main speaker for the Congress party during the discussion on the long-awaited bill. When asked about the government’s introduction of the bill in Lok Sabha, Sonia Gandhi expressed her support, stating, “It is ours, ‘apna hai’.” The Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Eighth Amendment) Bill, 2023, was included in the supplementary list of business. The bill proposes a 15-year reservation period with a quota for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes within the reserved seats for women. However, sources suggest that implementation of the legislation for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections is unlikely. It is expected to take effect after the delimitation process, possibly in 2029. The reserved seats for women will be rotated after each delimitation exercise. The government acknowledges the limited representation of women in State Assemblies and Parliament, despite their substantial participation in panchayats and municipal bodies. The inclusion of women in legislative debates and decision-making is believed to bring diverse perspectives and enhance their quality. The Congress party has criticized the bill as an empty promise and a betrayal of the women and girls of the country.
