Minnesota Democrat Rep. Dean Phillips, a candidate seeking the Democratic presidential nomination in 2024, declared on Friday that he will not run for reelection to Congress in 2024. “After three terms it is time to pass the torch,” Phillips said in a statement, urging the party to stop fighting among themselves and start fighting for each other to address the crisis of cooperation, common sense, and truth gripping America.
While Phillips’ call for unity may not resonate with some of his fellow Democrats, who have criticized him since announcing his primary challenge to incumbent President Joe Biden, the White House stated that President Biden would miss his support for the Biden-Harris legislative agenda. Phillips stated that he is running for president to strengthen the Democratic ticket amid low approval ratings for Biden and his administration. Notably, polls have shown former President Donald Trump leading in the 2024 Republican primary.
Previously in November, CNBC reported that Phillips has been receiving little support from major donors in Minnesota, and some have asked for their donations to be returned. Phillips also issued an apology for comments he made about Vice President Kamala Harris, where he referenced others’ opinions about her preparedness for office. He clarified that he shouldn’t have referenced others’ opinions and apologized to Harris and anyone affected by his comments.
In 2018, Phillips flipped Minnesota’s Third Congressional District blue and won his most recent election in 2022 by double digits. However, his recent primary challenge to President Biden and the subsequent reactions indicate that his political standing may be at risk. Phillips is a member of the bipartisan Problem Solvers Caucus and his current term in the House ends on January 3, 2025.
