Elon Musk’s xAI to Release First AI Model, Available to Select Group
Renowned entrepreneur Elon Musk has announced that his company, xAI, is set to release its first AI model. Musk made the announcement on X (formerly Twitter), revealing that the model will be made available to a “select group” on Saturday. He described the tech as the best currently available in some important respects. However, the specific members of the “select group” have not been disclosed.
The release marks a significant milestone for Musk’s newly established AI lab. Officially launched in July, the lab aims to understand the “true nature of the universe.” Musk later clarified that the overarching goal of xAI is to develop a “good AGI” that is both “maximally curious” and “truth-seeking.” The company will focus on tackling scientific questions and gaining a deeper understanding of reality.
Musk has been critical of OpenAI, a company he co-founded but later separated from. He particularly expressed concerns about OpenAI’s AI-powered chatbot, ChatGPT, suggesting that the underlying model is biased and overly “woke.” In response, Musk revealed his plan to create a maximally curious “TruthGPT” to address these issues.
The introduction of xAI’s AI model is expected to directly compete with existing AI models such as OpenAI’s GPT, Google’s PaLM 2, and Meta’s Llama. Musk has been recruiting talent for a large language model-based AI project, including former members of Google’s AI research unit DeepMind, Manuel Kroiss and Igor Babuschkin.
Insider reached out to representatives for Musk for comment but did not receive an immediate response. The release of xAI’s first AI model signifies Musk’s ongoing dedication to advancing AI technology and his ambition to push the boundaries of innovation.
