Elon Musk Introduces ‘Grok’ AI Bot as a Competitor to ChatGPT and Similar Systems

Entrepreneur Elon Musk has introduced Grok, the first technology out of his new AI company, xAI. Grok is inspired by “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” and is designed to answer unconventional questions and provide witty responses that other AI systems might avoid. Musk showcased Grok’s capabilities by sharing an example of it responding to a request for a step-by-step cocaine recipe. The company claims that Grok has an advantage due to its access to data from X, a platform formerly known as Twitter, and Musk showcased a side-by-side comparison of Grok and another AI bot, highlighting Grok’s superior access to current information.

Although xAI acknowledges that Grok, like all Large Language Models (LLMs), may generate false or contradictory information, it still believes Grok is the best in its compute class, outperforming models like ChatGPT-3.5 and Inflection-1 in tests on middle school math problems and Python coding tasks. According to Musk, xAI aims to position Grok as a competitor to companies like OpenAI and Inflection.

Grok, a term coined by Robert A. Heinlein in his science fiction novel “Stranger in a Strange Land,” represents deep empathy or intuitive understanding. xAI, formed by a team of former OpenAI and DeepMind employees, is dedicated to advancing collective understanding of the universe through artificial intelligence. The company is actively hiring for various positions.

While some AI systems are criticized for being overly politically correct, Musk believes in creating AI that is inclusive of all backgrounds and political views. Grok serves as a way to test this approach in a public setting. The prototype is currently in its early beta phase and will be available to a select group of users before its wider release. Users can join the waitlist for a chance to use the bot, and Grok will eventually be integrated into X Premium+, which costs $16 per month.
