Generating Passive Income through my Worksheet Side Hustle

Kindergarten teacher Becky Powell found herself in need of additional income while on maternity leave eight years ago. A friend suggested she use her son’s naptime to create educational resources to sell online. This led Powell to discover Teachers Pay Teachers, a platform for educators to buy and sell educational worksheets, activities, and lesson plans. Powell started by creating literacy-focused resources for her fellow kindergartner teachers, eventually developing her own store called Sight Word Activities.

Initially, Powell’s income was modest. However, within a few weeks, she began making enough to cover household expenses. After four months, she was able to pay off her and her husband’s student loans with the earnings from her store. Over time, the business grew into a six-figure income, bringing in $125,500 last year. Powell’s husband also manages a store on the platform, bringing in an additional $50,000 annually.

The success of their side hustle allowed the couple to pay off their student loans and use the extra earnings for more leisurely activities, such as trips to Disneyland. They even formed an S-Corp, combining their businesses to maximize their profits. Despite the demands of teaching, Powell continues to manage her side hustles, scaling back during the school year and ramping up during the summers.

The couple has used their extra income to pay off debts and mortgage payments, as well as for indulgent experiences like family trips to Disneyland and vacations to Aruba. The long-term success of their side hustles has given them financial freedom beyond their initial expectations.
