Highest voter turnout in the past 66 years recorded at 76.22% in MP.

Madhya Pradesh achieved a remarkable voter turnout of 76.22 percent in the recent single-phase polls for the state’s 230 assembly seats, marking the highest participation in 66 years. Seoni district led the way with an impressive 85.68 percent turnout, followed closely by Balaghat with 85.23 percent, and Agar with 85.03 percent. Additionally, Shajapur and Rajgarh recorded a voter turnout of 84.99 percent and 84.29 percent, respectively.

The Election Commission’s data revealed that 18 districts surpassed an 80 percent voter turnout, with another 19 districts reaching above 75 percent. However, Alirajpur district experienced the lowest turnout at 60.10 percent. Notably, Indore, the largest city of the state, witnessed a 70.54 percent turnout, while Bhopal recorded 66 percent, Jabalpur 74.30 percent, Gwalior 67.1 percent, and Rewa 66.85 percent.

Notably, Sonewani, a polling station in the Naxal-hit Balaghat district, registered a remarkable 100 percent voting from 42 voters, demonstrating a significant effort to facilitate voting among the tribal communities.

Out of the total of 2,533 candidates in the fray, one third-gender candidate from Malhara in Chhatarpur district is also contesting. Among the 230 seats, 148 are in the General category, while 35 seats are reserved for SC and 47 for ST category.

Furthermore, despite the high voter participation, the state experienced several serious incidents of violence during the assembly polls. One notable case involved BJP candidate Arvind Pateriya, who, along with 19 associates, was booked for the murder of Congress councillor Salman Khan. Pateriya was accused by the Congress Rajnagar MLA and candidate Vikram Singh ‘Natiraja’ of attempted murder. The BJP candidate, however, refuted the allegations in a video, calling for a judicial probe into the incident.

Overall, the high voter turnout in Madhya Pradesh’s assembly polls reflects a strong commitment to democratic participation, despite the challenges and incidents of violence that arose during this critical electoral process.
