In November, India’s power consumption increases by 8.5% to 119.64 billion units

India’s power consumption has seen a significant surge, growing by almost 8.5 per cent to 119.64 billion units in November. This increase in electricity demand is attributed to festive celebrations and a rise in economic activities. Government data shows that in November 2021, power consumption stood at 110.25 BU, higher than the 99.32 billion units recorded in November 2020.

The peak power demand, which measures the highest supply in a day, also experienced an increase, reaching 204.60 GW in November. This is a notable rise from the 187.34 GW recorded in November 2022 and the 166.10 GW in November 2021.

The power ministry had previously anticipated the country’s electricity demand to reach 229 GW during the summer, but unseasonal rain in April-July prevented the demand from reaching the projected level. However, peak supply reached a new high of 224.1 GW in June before dropping to 209.03 GW in July. Peak demand reached 238.19 GW in August, 240.17 GW in September, and 222.16 GW in October 2023.

Experts in the industry have pointed out that power consumption was negatively affected by widespread rainfall in March, April, May, and June. However, consumption saw growth in August, September, and October, driven by humid weather conditions and an uptick in industrial activities ahead of the festive season.

The 8.5 per cent growth in power consumption in November is seen as a reflection of the impact of festivals such as Dhanteras, Diwali, Bhaiya Dooj, and Dev Deepavali, as well as increased economic activities. These experts are expecting a steady growth in power consumption in the coming months following improvements in economic activities.
