India urges strict adherence to humanitarian law in Israel-Hamas conflict.

Days after an appalling attack on a hospital in Gaza sparked global outrage, India has called for a strict adherence to international humanitarian law. Arindam Bagchi, spokesperson for the External Affairs Ministry, expressed India’s concern over civilian casualties and the dire humanitarian situation. During his weekly media briefing, Bagchi emphasized the need for a complete observance of international humanitarian law in response to questions about the hospital attack.

“We strongly condemn the horrific attack on Israel,” said Bagchi, highlighting the importance of the international community standing together in combating terrorism in all its forms. Additionally, Bagchi reiterated India’s position in favor of direct negotiations for a two-state solution concerning the Palestine issue.

The explosion at the al-Ahli Arab Hospital in Gaza on Tuesday resulted in an estimated 470 deaths, leading to widespread international condemnation. Palestinian authorities blamed Israeli air strikes for the devastating incident, while Israel claimed it was caused by a misfired rocket launched from Gaza by the militant group Palestinian Islamic Jihad.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed shock at the loss of lives in the hospital attack and called for holding those responsible for civilian casualties accountable. Modi offered his heartfelt condolences to the victims’ families and sent prayers for the speedy recovery of the injured.

The ongoing conflict has been instigated by unprecedented and simultaneous attacks against Israel by Hamas militants from Gaza since October 7. In response, Israel has launched a massive counter offensive aimed at retaliating against these assaults.

According to the Gaza Health Ministry, over 3,300 people have been killed and more than 12,000 wounded in Gaza since the beginning of the conflict. On the Israeli side, approximately 1,400 people have lost their lives, with 3,800 injured as a result of the ruthless attacks by the Hamas militant group since October 7. Furthermore, nearly 200 individuals have been abducted by Hamas.
