India’s international air travel penetration continues to be low: CAPA

India’s domestic air travel market is booming, but international air travel is lagging behind, according to Kapi Kaul, chief of CAPA India. Speaking at an event in honor of JRD Tata, Kaul highlighted the significant difference in rankings between India’s domestic and international air traffic. He emphasized that despite being the third-largest domestic market, India falls at 18th place for international air travel penetration among the top 20 markets. Kaul also pointed out the low seats per capita consumption in India compared to countries like Australia.

Looking towards the future, Kaul expressed optimism about the potential for growth in international travel, especially as India’s economy expands. He cited the privatization of Air India as a landmark reform that positions Indian aviation for a promising decade ahead. Kaul urged the government to implement bold reforms and strengthen regulatory institutions to ensure a smooth flight into the future. The demand for international air travel is evident from the 10% CAGR surge in international passenger volumes at Indian airports over the past 15 years, reaching 69.5 million in FY19.

Kaul’s remarks underscore the need for India to address the imbalance between its domestic and international air travel markets and to secure a strong position in the global aviation industry.
