Instagram, owned by Meta, is following in the footsteps of Elon Musk’s X by testing a new feature that will only allow posts from paid verified users. This move comes after reports earlier this year suggested that Meta is working on a subscription service that would enable Facebook and Instagram users to pay for a verified account.
Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, stated that the company is exploring this new feature as a way for individuals, businesses, and creators to gain more control and increase their discoverability. The new toggle, called Meta Verified, will appear as an option under “Following” and “Favorites” when users tap the Instagram logo at the top of the app, according to The Verge.
The Meta Verified program will be available for $11.99 on the web or $14.99 in the app. This subscription will provide users with a new opportunity to enhance their presence in the Instagram feed. Mosseri encouraged users to provide feedback and express their interest in using this new feature for verified accounts.
In addition to this, reports have emerged stating that Meta is planning to introduce a $14 fee for accessing an ad-free Instagram or Facebook in Europe. Users in Europe will have the option to either pay the fee or choose to see personalized ads. For those who want to access both platforms, Instagram and Facebook, a combo subscription will be available for $17 per month. It is important to note that even with the subscription, Meta will still offer free versions of the apps with ads in the European Union.
Meta’s strategy to introduce these paid features and subscriptions demonstrates their focus on monetization and providing options for users to customize their experience on the platforms. As Instagram continues to experiment with new features and subscription models, it will be interesting to see how users respond and whether this move will enhance their overall experience on the platform.
