John Kerry reacts to COP28 president’s remarks on fossil fuels

U.S. Special Presidential Envoy for Climate, John Kerry, spoke at a COP28 session in Dubai on December 2, 2023. He emphasized the importance of countries prioritizing the fight to keep global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius. This comes after the COP28 president, Sultan Al-Jaber, made remarks suggesting that there was “no science” behind calls for a phase-out of fossil fuels, which were described as “farcical” by climate scientists.

In response to Al-Jaber’s comments, Kerry emphasized that G7 countries voted for a phasing out of unmitigated fossil fuel emissions based on scientific evidence. He stressed that every decision made should be geared towards advancing the 1.5 degrees goal.

A spokesperson for COP28 defended Al-Jaber’s comments by stating that the International Energy Agency and IPCC 1.5C scenarios outline a role for fossil fuels in the future energy system, albeit a smaller one.

The COP28 climate summit in Dubai has been closely monitored for its outcome, as the success of the talks is contingent on the agreement to phase out all fossil fuels, which are the chief driver of the climate crisis. While an early victory was achieved with the adoption of a new fund to help nations affected by the climate crisis, Al-Jaber’s comments were seen as an embarrassing setback for the COP28 host.

Kerry stressed the need for the fossil fuel industry to step up and do more to solve the problem of climate change more rapidly, as the world is in a race against time. The 1.5 degrees Celsius threshold is crucial in order to avoid tipping points that could lead to dramatic shifts in Earth’s life support system.
