Latest updates on Gaza conflict in the Israel-Hamas war

Biden Expresses Gratitude to Qatar, Egypt, and Israeli Leaders for Release of Hostages

U.S. President Joe Biden thanked Qatar, Egypt, and Israeli leaders for their role in facilitating the deal that resulted in the release of 24 hostages held by Hamas fighters. Biden expressed hope that the recent releases mark the beginning of greater progress. He delivered these remarks during a press conference in Nantucket, Massachusetts, U.S. on November 24, 2023. At a press conference, Biden emphasized that the halt of fighting in Gaza for four days, as part of a deal facilitated by U.S. diplomacy, was only the beginning of what he hoped would be further hostage releases by Hamas. He did not speculate about the duration of the Israel-Hamas war but expressed hope for an extension of the ongoing truce. He also expressed hope that American nationals held by Hamas would be freed.

Following the initial release of 24 hostages under the temporary ceasefire, President Biden stated that the magnitude of the next group of hostages to be released would be revealed within the next hour. He also admitted that the U.S. remains unsure about the locations and conditions of all of those being held by Hamas.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared his commitment to the return of all hostages, emphasizing that this is one of the goals of the war. He described the released hostages, including the children and mothers, as a top priority for Israel.

Qatar confirmed its role in the facilitating of two separate deals that resulted in the release of the 24 hostages by Hamas. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) also assisted in facilitating the release. Hamas released 13 Israeli hostages under one deal, and 10 Thai nationals and a Filipino citizen under another agreement.

A convoy of aid trucks successfully delivered fuel and food aid to Gaza through the Rafah border crossing under the temporary truce between Hamas and Israel.

Egypt confirmed that 25 hostages released by Hamas were transferred from Gaza to Egypt via the Rafah crossing. This transfer took place shortly after the 13 Israeli and 12 Thai captives were freed. This recent development is part of ongoing efforts to secure the release of all those held hostage by Hamas.
