Man of 47 years old spends $1,900 per month to reside on a boat.

Brian Trautman, a former software engineer, made the life-changing decision to leave his high-paying job and embark on a sailing journey around the world with his family. In 2008, Trautman sold all his possessions and purchased a 53-foot sailboat named the SV Delos, which he made his final payment on in 2019. He and his wife, Karin, have since been living on the sailboat, traveling the world and documenting their adventures on their YouTube channel, Sailing SV Delos.

Living on a sailboat comes with its own set of challenges, such as limited access to fresh fruits and vegetables and dependence on the weather for daily activities. However, Trautman and his family have managed to adapt to life on the boat, maintaining modern conveniences in a smaller scale.

Throughout their journey, the Trautmans have visited over 45 countries and have lived primarily on the sailboat, raising their daughter Sierra on board. They briefly moved back to land for Sierra’s birth, but quickly returned to the boat to continue their adventure. Despite the challenges, Trautman emphasizes the rewards of living this lifestyle, including witnessing marine life up close and living on their own terms.

Currently docked in French Polynesia, the family plans to stay there for the next year, with consideration to moving back to Sweden full-time to give their daughter a chance to grow up around Karin’s culture and family. Trautman reflects on the transformational impact of their journey, stating that it has changed his perspective on priorities and the importance of spending time with loved ones.

In addition to creating content for their YouTube channel, the Trautmans also sustain their lifestyle through crowdfunding and income from the channel. While the challenges of living on a sailboat are numerous, the family finds fulfillment in the unique experiences and connections they have made throughout their journey.
