India has issued an advisory to its citizens living in Canada, as well as those planning to travel there, urging them to exercise caution due to the growing anti-India activities and politically-condoned hate crimes in the country. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) released a statement following a diplomatic dispute between India and Canada over the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in June.
The ministry highlighted the threats targeting Indian diplomats and members of the Indian community who oppose the anti-India agenda. It advised Indian nationals to avoid traveling to regions and venues in Canada where such incidents have occurred. The High Commission/Consulate General will maintain contact with Canadian authorities to ensure the safety and well-being of the Indian community in Canada. The government specifically urged Indian students to exercise extreme caution and remain vigilant in light of the deteriorating security environment in Canada.
Furthermore, Indian nationals and students from India in Canada are advised to register with the High Commission of India in Ottawa or the Consulates General of India in Toronto and Vancouver through their respective websites or the MADAD portal madad.gov.in. This registration will enable the High Commission and Consulates General to establish better communication with Indian citizens in Canada in case of emergencies or untoward incidents.
In response to the escalating tensions between India and Canada over Khalistan extremism, a senior Canadian diplomat was expelled by India on Tuesday. This move came after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau claimed that “foreign powers” were involved in the killing of pro-Khalistan leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar and dismissed an Indian diplomat. High Commissioner to India Cameron MacKay was summoned by the MEA headquarters in Delhi and informed of the expulsion.
The MEA justified the decision by expressing the Indian government’s growing concern regarding the interference of Canadian diplomats in internal Indian matters and their involvement in anti-India activities. The expelled diplomat has been instructed to leave India within the next five days.
MEA sources stated that the grounds for the diplomat’s expulsion were strong and had been considered for a long time. The advisory to Indian nationals and students in Canada is a direct consequence of the escalating tensions between the two countries over the issue of Khalistan extremism.
Overall, India is actively taking measures to ensure the safety and security of its citizens in Canada amidst the strained relations and rising concerns over Khalistan extremism.
