Microsoft is making preparations to accommodate hundreds of OpenAI employees at its LinkedIn offices in downtown San Francisco. This move comes after Microsoft previously invested billions in OpenAI.
The company is also readying its human resources and legal staff to handle the hiring and onboarding process, as well as creating workspaces and providing Apple MacBook laptops for the incoming employees.
Following a letter signed by over 90% of OpenAI employees demanding the resignation of the OpenAI board, Microsoft had initially announced that Sam Altman and Greg Brockman, among others, would join Microsoft as part of a new artificial intelligence research group. However, it later became less clear whether Altman and Brockman would actually be joining Microsoft.
Microsoft CEO, Satya Nadella, emphasized that it is the choice of OpenAI employees whether they stay in their current roles or move to Microsoft. He stated that his company has everything it needs to continue innovating independently, leaving the decision in the employees’ hands.
In light of the uncertainty surrounding the future of OpenAI and the potential return of Sam Altman, Microsoft’s preparations are taking into account the employees who are considering their options. In a show of good faith, Kevin Scott, Microsoft’s technology chief, has offered to match the compensation of OpenAI employees who are contemplating leaving the company after Altman’s departure.
