Humans Could Merge with AI in the Future, Says OpenAI Cofounder Ilya Sutskever
Ilya Sutskever, the chief scientist of OpenAI, has suggested that humans may choose to merge with artificial intelligence (AI) in the future in order to keep up with superintelligent machines. Speaking to the MIT Technology Review, Sutskever expressed concerns about whether there is room for human beings in a world dominated by smarter AIs after the challenge of rogue AI is overcome.
Sutskever is currently involved in OpenAI’s “superalignment” project, which aims to develop fail-safes to prevent superintelligent AI from going rogue. However, he also contemplates the concept of human augmentation as a means to compete with AI. He believes that some individuals, initially those who are daring and adventurous, may choose to become “part AI.”
It remains uncertain what merging with AI would look like in practice, and whether it is even possible. Elon Musk, the CEO of Neuralink, has also speculated about humans merging with AI to avoid being left behind by superintelligent machines. Musk’s brain implant company aims to achieve a symbiosis with AI. However, Neuralink currently faces controversy regarding the alleged gruesome and painful deaths of monkeys implanted with the company’s brain chip.
As to whether Sutskever himself would choose to merge with AI, he admits uncertainty, stating that it is something he thinks about but doesn’t have a definitive answer to. OpenAI did not respond to a request for comment from Insider at the time of the report.
