“10 arrested in New York in connection with Gambino Mafia family; 6 others arrested in Italy”
In a major operation, federal prosecutors in New York have announced the arrest of 10 men allegedly associated with the notorious Gambino Mafia family. Six other alleged organized crime members and associates were also arrested in Italy.
The defendants in Brooklyn federal court are accused of a racketeering conspiracy which included “violent extortions, assaults, arson, and union-related crimes,” according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York.
It is alleged that these crimes were committed as part of an effort to dominate New York’s carting and demolition industries. The Gambino Mafia family, one of New York’s five Cosa Nostra organized crime groups, was previously led by the infamous boss John Gotti.
The arrests were part of a coordinated effort with Italian law enforcement, who arrested six defendants on charges including mafia association and related offenses. One defendant remains at large.
The defendants in Brooklyn federal court include alleged Gambino captain Joseph “Joe Brooklyn” Lanni, along with several alleged soldiers and associates. This is a developing story, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
