Renowned English reformist and founder of modern nursing, Florence Nightingale, continues to inspire generations even a century after her passing. In a rural area of the Srivilliputhur region in Virudhunagar district, Tamil Nadu, K Suganthi, a 50-year old woman, is hailed as a guardian angel for ill and pregnant women in the Sri Lankan refugee camp. For the past 26 years, Suganthi has been saving lives and providing essential medical care.
Having started her career in 1996 as an auxiliary nurse midwife (ANM), Suganthi never anticipated receiving the prestigious Florence Nightingale Award from the President of India in 2023. Born in the Thoothukudi district, her family moved to Virudhunagar when she was in Class 6.
Suganthi began her journey as an ANM in a nearby village near Karur and later transferred to Reddiapatti, where she continued her service at the Perumalthevanpatti health sub-centre. Despite the challenges posed by the backward and tribal communities residing in Perumal Devan Patti, Narikuruvar Kalani, and the Sri Lankan Refugee Camp area, Suganthi’s warm and caring nature has earned their trust and respect over the years.
When dealing with high-risk pregnancies, Suganthi remains by the side of the expectant mothers throughout their hospital stay and recovery, providing constant support and care. Additionally, during the COVID-19 pandemic, she assisted approximately 25 Narikurava families by distributing grains along with her maternal care services.
Dr. Karunagaraprabhu, Block Medical Officer, acknowledged Suganthi’s diligent work and revealed that her oversight ensures that every child in the hamlet receives their immunizations.
In recognition of her selfless dedication over the past 26 years, Suganthi was recently honored with the Florence Nightingale Award by the President of India. This esteemed accolade serves as a testament to her unwavering commitment to improving healthcare and saving lives.
