Kolkata’s Pollution Affects Diabetic Patients, Says Green Technologist

In a city known for its high levels of pollution, diabetics in Kolkata are being urged to take extra precautions by green technologist Somendra Mohan Ghosh. Ghosh warns that air pollution is a leading cause of insulin resistance and can worsen cases of type 2 diabetes mellitus.

According to Ghosh, the association between air pollution and diabetes is especially strong for traffic-associated pollutants, gaseous nitrogen dioxide, tobacco smoke, and particulate matter. Medical professionals in the city are recommending that diabetic patients take precautions both indoors and outdoors to protect themselves.

One such precaution is the mandatory use of face masks, similar to those worn during the Covid-19 pandemic, when venturing outside. Doctors also advise diabetic patients to continue wearing masks at their workplaces whenever possible, as this can reduce the impact of PM 2.5 in the air and minimize harm to their bodies.

Inside the home, doctors recommend the installation of HEPA filter-fitted air purifiers, as these are highly effective at filtering dust and pollutant particles from the air. Additionally, diabetic patients are encouraged to engage in free-hand exercises for at least 30 minutes daily, as fitness experts and yoga teachers claim this can help lower blood sugar levels and improve circulation.

The medical community is urging diabetic patients in Kolkata to take these precautions seriously in order to safeguard their health and well-being in the face of the city’s pervasive pollution.
