Indian telecom giants Reliance Jio and Airtel have both reported an increase in their subscriber base during the month of August 2023. According to reports, Reliance Jio saw the highest increase in subscribers, while Airtel also experienced growth. However, Vi reported a decline in its subscriber base.
During August 2023, Reliance Jio gained 3.25 million subscribers, solidifying its position as the industry leader with a total subscriber base of 444.73 million. Airtel followed suit with an addition of 1.22 million subscribers, bringing its total subscriber base to 376.46 million. Despite the overall increase in subscribers, the active subscriber base in the industry declined by 3 million, marking the highest decline in nine months.
In addition, the mobile number portability (MNP) requests reached a 29-month high, demonstrating increased competition among telecom companies. It is expected that this trend will continue due to users switching to experience 5G on Airtel and Jio, as well as rising competition for 5G subscribers and Airtel’s expansion into rural areas.
Overall, Reliance Jio and Airtel continue to dominate the Indian telecom industry, while Vi faces challenges in maintaining its subscriber base. The sector’s active subscriber base has seen a decline, and the MNP requests are at a record high due to the competition between the major players.
