According to Audrey Hendley, President of American Express Travel, the data reveals that people are seeking new experiences and a chance to immerse themselves in the local culture during their travels.
The report highlights Gen-Z and Millennial travelers showing a particular interest in the trending locations. For example, Japan has seen a surge of over 1300% in bookings from 2019 to 2023, while San Miguel de Allende saw an increase of over 400%, and Australia saw an almost 800% increase among this demographic.
The top 10 trending travel destinations for 2024 are Adelaide Hills, Australia; Bodrum, Turkey; Cervo, Italy; St. Kitts & Nevis; Niseko, Japan; San Miguel De Allende, Mexico; Santa Fe, New Mexico, U.S.; The Seychelles; Udaipur, India; and Zermatt, Switzerland.
Santa Fe, New Mexico’s inclusion on this list makes it the only U.S. city featured. As the oldest capital city in America, Santa Fe is known for its celebrated Spanish, Mexican, and Native American art and traditions. It is home to more than 250 galleries and holds a designation as a UNESCO Creative City in the U.S.
Niseko, Japan, another trending vacation destination on the list, is well-known for its skiing and excellent snow conditions. After Japan opened its borders to tourists in 2022, the country saw a significant increase in visitors, making it the fastest-growing global travel destination for Gen-Z and Millennials, according to the American Express Travel report.
