The New York-based global investment manager recognizes India’s increasing importance and is primarily seeking investments from North America.
According to Mohit Gulati, the president and chief investment officer of Zephyr Peacock India, India is attracting significant attention from global investors. He highlights that India now commands attention due to its growing importance in the world, further emphasized by recent global economic shifts, including the disengagement of China from the global market.
Gulati explains that despite India’s smaller size and inconsistent investment returns in the past, the country is now an attractive destination for growth and capital deployment. With India’s growing weightage on the MSCI All Country Index, there is greater interest from global funds, which are looking for alternative destinations for investment. Investors are also taking note of India’s strong digitization efforts and promising GDP growth, as well as evidence of good exits from investments in the country.
Initially targeting $120-130 million for their India-dedicated fund, Zephyr Peacock has now increased the target to $200 million due to their growing confidence in their strategy and the opportunities present in India. However, they acknowledge that the landscape has changed, and investors and limited partners are taking a more cautious approach to investment, given the recent trend of inflated valuations and unstable business ideas.
Furthermore, Mohit Gulati observes changes in the behavior of startup founders, noting that they are more aware of the need for cash flows and profitability. In light of these shifts in the market, Zephyr Peacock believes that some good investment opportunities may emerge as the industry begins to establish equilibrium following the recent bubble.
