Report: Apple plans to introduce OLED technology to nine new devices by 2027

Apple is preparing to revolutionize its iPad lineup with the introduction of OLED displays, starting with the introduction of this technology on the iPad Pro models next year. According to a report by MacRumors, Taiwan’s ET News was the first to share this news.

In 2026, the iPad mini and iPad Air will join the OLED revolution, with the display on the iPad mini expanding from 8.3 to 8.7 inches, while the iPad Air will maintain its 10.9-inch screen. Apple is also rumored to introduce OLED technology to the 12.9-inch iPad Air model in 2027, after its expected release with an LCD display early next year.

But the innovations don’t stop there. Apple plans to introduce an upgraded OLED panel with improved light efficiency for the iPad Pro in 2027, which is estimated to reduce power consumption by around 20%. This next-generation panel will utilize Color Filter on Encapsulation (CoE) technology. Additionally, speculations suggest that Apple might incorporate under-display camera technology for the first time on the iPad, thanks to the use of a color filter.

The iPad is not the only device getting an OLED upgrade. MacRumors report that Apple plans to bring OLED to the 16-inch MacBook Pro by 2025 and to the 14-inch model by 2026. In the same year, the 13-and 15-inch MacBook Air models are expected to make the switch from LCD to OLED.

In further developments, Apple has announced its support for the RCS (Rich Communication Services) messaging standard on iPhones, which is predominantly used by most Android devices. This support is slated for later in 2024 and is aimed at offering better interoperability for cross-platform messages, according to a statement to 9to5Mac.
