Report: Indian Generation Z spends 73% more time on AI skill acquisition compared to other generations

LinkedIn’s global professional networking platform reported that Gen Z spends 1.3 times more time than Gen X and 2.4 times more time than Baby Boomers on the platform. This demonstrates their significant engagement with the platform.

According to Ashutosh Gupta, Country Manager at LinkedIn India, upskilling is no longer optional but imperative. This renewed focus on developing vital human skills such as leadership and problem-solving is essential to fully harness AI’s potential.

Furthermore, a report revealed that global AI conversations increased by 70% from December 2022 to September 2023, indicating the growing significance of AI in various conversations and industries.

In India, the learning preferences of different generations vary. Gen Z is focused on digital skills such as Programming Languages, Cloud Computing, and Data Analysis, while Millennials and Gen X are investing in soft skills like Leadership and Management, Personal Effectiveness, and Personal Development.

As AI continues to take over routine tasks, there is an opportunity for professionals to focus on meaningful and creative work that requires soft skills. Tech professionals in the APAC region who have developed soft skills in addition to hard skills have been promoted over 13% faster than those who only possess hard skills.

In India, the most demanded soft skills for AI-related job postings include communication, analytical skills, and sales. Additionally, developments in generative AI are offering opportunities to break down barriers across cultures, geographies, and industries, expanding the scope for hybrid work settings.

Organizations are responding to this demand for flexibility, with hybrid job posts in India increasing from 13.2% in August 2022 to 20.1% in August 2023, as reported.
