Six students banned from entering campus indefinitely following JU ragging death

Six students from Jadavpur University have been barred from entering the campus indefinitely following their alleged involvement in the death of a fresher back in August. The decision, which comes almost two months after the anti-ragging committee recommended their exclusion, was announced in a notification dated November 24 by JU registrar Snehamanju Basu.

The students, currently in judicial custody at Presidency Jail, will not be allowed to enter the campus or the hostels until they are cleared of all allegations. This move was ratified by the university’s executive council in October, though the official notification was only issued recently.

The fresher had tragically fallen off a second-floor balcony of the JU Main Hostel on August 9, following intense ragging, and passed away the next morning at a private hospital. The delay in implementing the recommendations of the anti-ragging panel has drawn criticism from the Jadavpur University Teachers’ Association as well as senior professor Imankalyan Lahiri.

The six students, all seniors in various undergraduate disciplines, including economics, sociology, electrical engineering, civil engineering, and computer science, are among the thirteen individuals who have been arrested in connection with the student’s death. This list includes postgraduate students and a PhD researcher who had overstayed in the hostel despite no longer being a student.

University English professor Manojit Mondal expressed that the decision to bar the students should have been taken much earlier. Basu, however, could not be reached for any explanation regarding the delay in issuing the notification.
