The concern of GenZ about declining wildlife habitat is voiced

Aaranyak Organizes Nature’s Wonderland Event to Educate Students on Forest Ecology

In a bid to enhance understanding of forest ecology in urban landscapes, Aaranyak, with the support of Wipro Foundation and LEA Associates South Asia Pvt. Ltd. (LASA), organized an event titled “Nature’s Wonderland – A Journey of Curiosity” at RReserve Forest, Kamrup District. The event saw the participation of ten students from Rani High School, accompanied by their faculty members, Prarthana Mudoi and Kakali Buragohain.

Aaranyak highlighted pertinent environmental issues such as deforestation, the urban heat island (UHI) effect, freshwater scarcity, pollution, flash floods, and climate change that are impacting the urban landscape. The organization emphasized the changing landscapes around the world due to rapid urbanization, with cities swelling in population at the cost of natural resources.

The participants were briefed by Aaranyak’s Biologist, Jigyas Boruah, on the art and science of birdwatching and the use of binoculars to enjoy birdwatching. They were also educated on the ecology and habitat characteristics of various bird species present in the Reserve Forest.

Despite environmental challenges, Guwahati, a city surrounded by green-covered hills, is thriving due to the presence of forests within and around the city. Aaranyak emphasized that these forests provide various environmental services and socio-economic benefits to the city and its inhabitants.

During the event, nature enthusiasts engaged in activities such as using fallen leaves collected on the trail to create art depicting the variety and variability of flora and fauna. The activity aimed to shed light on the enthusiasm and awareness of GenZ on environmental issues and biodiversity conservation.

The coordination and conduction of the journey were overseen by Aaranyak’s Pranab Goswami and Wasima Begum, facilitated by Bijay Kalita and Bikash Goyari.

The event provided valuable insights into forest ecology and environmental conservation, emphasizing the importance of preserving natural habitats and ecosystems. (ANI)
