Tirupati, Nellore, Prakasam, Bapatla, Krishna, West Godavari, Konaseema, and Kakinada of AP Districts on Alert for Cyclone ‘Michaung’

Heavy rains battered parts of Andhra Pradesh on Monday due to the impact of the cyclonic storm ‘Michaung’ as it approaches the state’s southern coastal region prior to making landfall. An alert has been issued to eight districts in the state, including Tirupati, Nellore, Prakasam, Bapatla, Krishna, West Godavari, Konaseema, and Kakinada.

Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy convened a meeting with senior officials to review the cyclone and initiated several relief efforts. The severe cyclonic storm is anticipated to hit near Bapatla on Tuesday with winds expected to reach speeds of 100 km per hour, along with gusts of up to 110 kmph. The weather system is projected to persist until December 7, after which it will regress into a deep depression.

The Chief Minister’s Office released a statement announcing the allocation of Rs 2 crore to Tirupati district and Rs 1 crore to each of the other affected districts for relief measures. Additional funds will also be provided if necessary, said Chief Minister Reddy, who also sanctioned the deployment of senior IAS officers as special officers in the affected regions.

Furthermore, officials are focusing on preventing loss of life and livestock, as well as safeguarding crops. The evacuation of affected individuals is currently underway at 181 relief camps in the eight districts. To support the relief efforts, five National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams and an equal number of State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams have been mobilized.

In addition, Chief Minister Reddy directed officials to engage the services of ward and village secretariats, village clinics, and agricultural assistance centers to provide medical, food, and drinking water support to evacuees. Financial assistance and food rations will also be distributed to affected families. The cyclonic storm is expected to intensify and move northward toward the Andhra Pradesh coast before crossing between Nellore and Machilipatnam, close to Bapatla on December 5.

Due to the heavy rainfall, the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) has temporarily suspended the holy bath ritual at Sri Kapilathirtham waterfalls. Additionally, TDP general secretary Nara Lokesh has postponed a political walkathon called ‘Yuva Galam’ due to the inclement weather.
