We sampled pumpkin pies from Costco, Trader Joe’s, and other retailers

It’s Thanksgiving season, and all the focus is on the perfect feast. But let’s be honest, after slaving away to cook the turkey and all the other sides, dessert can seem like a daunting task. So, why not consider outsourcing the pie to your local supermarket?

CNBC Make It recently conducted a taste test to determine the best store-bought pumpkin pie. Five pies from various national and regional chains were sampled, including Trader Joe’s, BJ’s Wholesale Club, Wegman’s, Costco, and Walmart.

Each pie was unpackaged before the taste test, and the staff was only informed of the origin of each pie after they had voted. The clear winner, however, was Costco’s pumpkin pie.

Coming in at number 5 was Trader Joe’s, with one vote and a price of $6.99. Despite the store’s reputation for great pre-packaged goods, the pie was considered the worst of the bunch, with one tester stating, “I nearly spit it out.”

Wegman’s took the fourth position, with two votes and a price of $11.00. It didn’t stand out visually, but was considered okay in flavor. Walmart’s pie also had two votes and was priced at $4.42, but it divided opinions among the testers.

In second position was BJ’s Wholesale Club, with three votes and a price of $5.99. The pie stood out for its spice-forward flavor profile, which was either loved or disliked by the testers.

But the clear winner was Costco, with five votes and a price of $5.99. The pie was popular among the testers, with comments on its creamy consistency and a good balance of spice and pumpkin.

So, this Thanksgiving, if you want a delicious, stress-free pumpkin pie, head to Costco for the best store-bought option.
