External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and his Italian counterpart Antonio Taj signed two significant agreements, aimed at enhancing the mobility of youth and skilled workers in a safe and legal manner. The agreements, namely the Migration and Mobility Partnership and the Executive Programme on Cultural Cooperation for the period 2023-27, were signed during Jaishankar’s official visit to Italy from November 2 to 3. The Ministry of External Affairs described these agreements as pivotal in promoting people-to-people ties, trade, and tourism.
During his visit, Jaishankar had the opportunity to meet with Italian President Sergio Mattarella and engage in delegation-level talks with Foreign Minister Tajani. He also had meetings with Defence Minister Guido Crosetto and Minister of Enterprises and Made in Italy, Adolfo Urso. In addition, Jaishankar addressed the Joint Committees of External and Defence Affairs, and EU Affairs in the Italian Senate, as well as interacted with prominent think tanks and thought leaders.
The meeting between Jaishankar and President Mattarella reaffirmed their commitment to advancing bilateral ties and strengthening India’s relations with Italy and the European Union. The Italian President expressed his strong support for deepening India-Italy and India-EU linkages.
Furthermore, Jaishankar held a meeting with Defence Minister Crosetto, focusing on deepening strategic cooperation in areas such as defence manufacturing, counter-terrorism, cyber security, and the maritime domain. Minister Urso discussed ways to enhance bilateral trade and investment, with a specific emphasis on areas like agro-tech, engineering, digital infrastructure, innovation, and space.
Both Jaishankar and Tajani reviewed the entire scope of the India-Italy Strategic Partnership, expressing satisfaction with the steady growth in various areas of bilateral cooperation, including high-level exchanges, economic collaboration, defence and security, science and technology, culture, and people-to-people connectivity. They also recognized the immense potential for further collaboration in fields such as Renewable Energy, IT and startups, digital infrastructure, innovation, Artificial Intelligence, cyber, and space.
The economic partnership between India and Italy, two of the top 10 economies globally, is vital for diversifying the global supply chain based on their respective strengths. The ministers also discussed important regional and international developments, such as India’s successful G20 Presidency, Italy’s upcoming G7 Presidency, India-EU relations, conflicts in Ukraine and West Asia, and the Indo-Pacific.
Jaishankar applauded Italy for its participation in key India-led global initiatives and its alignment with India’s views on significant global issues. The statement highlighted Italy’s interest in further cooperation between the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the Italian Space Agency, ASI.
Before concluding his visit, Jaishankar engaged with the Indian diaspora, the India-Italy Parliamentary Friendship Group, and senior dignitaries of the Italian government. Overall, Jaishankar’s visit aimed to strengthen the historical ties between India and Italy, further bolster bilateral cooperation in various areas of the Strategic Partnership, and address contemporary global issues and challenges.
