Nine ‘non-negotiables’ for a long, happy life from 263 of the world’s longest-living people

For the past 20 years, I have extensively researched the five Blue Zones across the world – areas where people live exceptionally long lives such as Okinawa, Japan; Sardinia, Italy; Nicoya, Costa Rica; Ikaria, Greece and Loma Linda, California. Based on interviews with 263 people aged 100 or older, I have identified nine non-negotiable principles, which I have termed the “Power 9,” that contribute to their longevity.

First and foremost, the people in these Blue Zones move naturally as they don’t engage in intense exercise but rather live in environments that encourage physical activity. They also have a clear sense of purpose beyond just work, and they know when to downshift and relax. Additionally, they practice the “80% rule” at mealtimes and consume a plant-based diet, with beans as a cornerstone. Moderate alcohol consumption is also a regular occurrence among these long-lived individuals.

Moreover, they are part of faith-based communities and prioritize family and loved ones, keeping aging parents and grandparents nearby. Lastly, they surround themselves with social circles that support healthy behaviors, further contributing to their longevity.

Following these principles won’t guarantee that one will live to 100, but it significantly increases the chances of adding more happy years to life. Dan Buettner, an esteemed explorer and longevity researcher, discovered these principles through his extensive studies and work. His research and findings have been chronicled in the bestselling books “The Blue Zones: Lessons for Living Longer from the People Who’ve Lived the Longest” and “The Blue Zones Solution: Eating and Living Like the World’s Healthiest People.”

In conclusion, the key to longevity lies in embracing these nine principles, which have proven to be invaluable for people living in the Blue Zones. For those seeking to lead longer and healthier lives, these principles may provide the blueprint for a more fulfilling and extended lifespan.
